But still, even rumors of MGS4 going to the 360 are an ill-omen for PS3 fans and owners. The system has been plagued since its launch, and things don't seem to be looking up. Initial sales of the PS3 lagged far behind the Wii, as well as the 360 (which had of course been out for some time by then). While customers are still scouring game stores looking for Wii's, the craze to get PS3's seems to have died down. They are still a ways behind in the sales race.
There are number of things that could explain this, but I think the biggest is the price issue. While the Wii is selling for $250, the 360 somewhere between $300 and $500 (depending on the size of your hard drive and peripherals included) the cheapest version of the PS3 is still $500. Add in games, extra controllers and other hard ware and accessories, and you're looking at a hefty amount of cash ($700-$1000 for a couple controllers and games).
And for that price, what do gamers get? The 360 and the PS3 both offer high-quality DVD players, both offer great graphics and wireless controllers. So between those 2, it comes down to the games. And PS3 simply does not have the games to offer to win over the customers. The 360 has had a number of great launches, including Halo 3, Gears of War, Condemned and others. They have already built up a considerable library of games, and even if they didn't make any new ones I would still want the system for what it already has. Then the big blow came: Assassin's Creed, set to be one of PS3's biggest exclusive titles (along with MGS4) is announced for the 360 as well. With the swing from being a PS3 exclusive to being on the 360 as well, many gamers heard the death toll for Sony's new system. Unlike Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft cannot live on 1st-party support alone.
If Sony loses MGS4 to the 360, I don't think there will be any games that can save the system. The PS3 could end up being a much-higher priced Dreamcast, unless Sony finds some way to turn their game around.
